SEPARATING THE BEST FROM THE REST

by: Yan G. | date: N/A
Since 1994, I have had a significant involvement with the design industry. This time has been dedicated to working with both interior and exterior projects. Throughout the past decade I have been called upon to perform as a creative consultant for a number of my colleagues. Also my work as an artist has been displayed successfully in two exhibitions, a success I am extremely proud of. In 1999 I was officially recognized by the Chair of the Art Committee of my city at the city hall as a Surrealist Artist and Modern Designer. Becoming an artist and designer has long been my dream. To explore every aspect, every small detail about this industry, I am glad to have accomplished so much in such a short amount of time.

I have studied two different disciplines.

In 1998, I successfully graduated from two schools, Fine Art School and Advertising Design & Manual Graphic Design School. At the time I developed an unbelievable passion for art and design, and right away I’ve started to live my life completely as an artist and designer, decorating apartments, working as a creative director on interior design projects for bar, pubs and clubs, designing woman’s wear, etc.

In 2000 I got involved in graphic design industry as a Web Designer, Print Media Designer and Advertising Designer. By 2002 I was already involved in another industry, Industrial Design, designing, developing and building a prototype of a unique table lamps collection. Opening my own business, MDStudio (Modern Design Studio) in 2003 was a collaboration of my experience in Décor, Fashion Design, Industrial Design and Graphic Design.

When I got my self into the business side of this industry I’ve noticed a lot of negative aspects.

There are far to many businesses dealing with designs, mostly graphic design firms/studios/ houses/companies or whatever they call themselves, in the area. That being said, I’ve found perhaps 10 or 15 companies that actually design! I’m not referring to Photoshop users who mainly morph 5-6 images. I’m referring to those who know how to do their work properly, and the do consider the part of solving the problem that their clients are giving them to solve.

However, to hire those designers or companies, tend to be very expensive, I’m not referring to $1,000, I’m referring to those prices starting of $50,000 and up. This naturally makes them less profitable to companies who need to advertise or some other design services.

The rest of those so called “design” companies are only interested in making money. What do I mean by that; it means that the company doesn’t get the proper design for their needs. Unfortunately, most companies fall into the trap of good salesman in the design industry, so it is now become a straggle to simply find a qualified design firm. On the whole, companies get a poor morph of images that are found on the internet or templates of existing designs from other companies. If the problem isn’t clear, it’s that the company aren’t getting what they are paying for; a tailored design for their specific business.

DESIGN it is a very delicate profession and very a very unique field. Why do companies go to designers? To be happy and proud that they have a web site? To tell their friends: look I’m a cool and modern business, I have a web site. NO! Companies turn to designers and ask for help, even if they are not saying the actual word “help” the do need help to promote their products, services, etc. to the public, to tell the public “Look I am a business and a good one, we’ll give you whatever you may need from our services or products and it would be with the best price and the best quality you will ever find!”

Companies need to advertise them self, in order to notify the public of their products and/or services. The first thing that any new company (or maybe existing company) need is the image of the company, the public does see the attractive secretary in the office or fancy furniture & equipment in the office space, they see the logo, they see the business card, they see company’s official letters and envelopes, they see the web site.

These are the greatest tools in the world today to show your self to the public, and if all of these tools are used incorrectly… you will be the one who would suffer from this, not your friends and the company who did this poor job. Proper design means that your field of business is well presented in your logo or any other graphical elements that is made for your business, no matter what your business does, you need that strong identity to allow the public to recognize/identify your company, the public must see your logo and know right away what your company provides.

Companies doe not know what they need, and have no experience in design, especially when it concerns the promotion of their products and/or services. They might make something by themselves, which is wrong since they are not qualified. Some companies try to do something by themselves. Yes they might save a couple of thousands of dollars but later they will lose on their clients because whatever they will do will not work as it should work.

That is way design industry exists, and companies do not have to like the web site that is done for them, because this web site is not made for their personal pleasure, this web site or any other graphical element are created for the public who need to identify with the products and/or services that the company offers. That way good designer will do their job the way that is appropriate for the company.

Design has to work for your company; it has to tell the public about you and your products/services in the correct way!

World wide known company Coca Cola has spend millions of dollars to find the proper color for the image we all see and know today; another world wide known company SUN Technologies one of the largest manufactures of servers and other computer and networking products. Hired unbelievable amount of designers (bad designers) throughout a long time and non of them could come-up with this strong, long lasting and impressive identity/brand for this specific company and company do not succeed, than they finally found and spend a lot of money to hire this one designer that created and designed the identity/brand (logo) that we all see and know today.

This illustrates that to spend money on developing this strong, loud speaking and long lasting identity/brand (logo) that the public would recognize and remember is very wise investment!

Please do not try to think about design in terms of how much money you spend, because every dollar you spend in creating a unique design (image) for your company or product/services…

You are investing in your company!
